What Is Creatine?
Creatine is a naturally occurring, nitrogen-containing compound made by the body from the amino acids arginine, glycine and methionine.
It has the empirical formula of C4H9N3O2 and because it is made from amino acids, often gets confused as being one.
However, creatine is not an actually an amino acid, and is properly classified in chemistry as a guanidino compound.
Creatine is also obtained from foods such as meat and fish. Most of the body's creatine is stored in skeletal muscle as free creatine and phosphocreatine.

Your muscles use ATP - adenosine triphosphate as an immediate source of cellular energy. During short bursts of intense exercise, ATP is required extremely quickly.

The main benefit of creatine loading is speed.

Larger athletes may sometimes use more than 5 g/day, but taking more creatine than is required to maintain muscle stores does not automatically mean greater results.
If using 10 g/day, splitting it into two 5 g servings may also be easier on the digestive system than taking the entire amount at once.
Does Creatine Make You Gain Weight?
Creatine can increase scale weight, particularly during the first several days of a loading phase.

Why Did I Gain 10 Pounds After Taking Creatine?

Creatine-associated water retention may explain part of a rapid increase, particularly if you have been loading. However, scale weight is also affected by glycogen, carbohydrate intake, sodium, food volume, hydration and changes in body fat or muscle tissue.

How Much Water Should I Drink While Loading Creatine?
You do not need to force down an arbitrary extra litre of water simply because you are using creatine.
Instead, maintain normal good hydration and increase your fluid intake appropriately when training hard, sweating heavily or exercising in hot conditions.
Research does not support the old idea that creatine inherently causes dehydration. Studies have instead found no evidence that normal creatine supplementation increases the risk of dehydration during exercise. (4)
How Much Water Should You Mix Creatine With?
There is no magic water-to-creatine ratio. Mix creatine with enough liquid to make it comfortable and convenient to drink.
Creatine monohydrate is not highly soluble in cool water, so some powder may remain at the bottom of the glass or shaker. Warmer liquid can improve solubility, but creatine does not need to be perfectly dissolved before you consume it.

Can Women Take Creatine?

Do You Need To Cycle Creatine?
No. Routine creatine cycling is not required.
There is no established requirement to take creatine for a fixed number of weeks and then deliberately stop for several weeks.
Once muscle creatine stores have been increased, a regular maintenance intake can be continued. Taking a break will gradually allow muscle creatine stores to return towards baseline, but an off-cycle is not required simply to make creatine work again.

Does Creatine Cause Hair Loss?
Current evidence does not show that creatine causes hair loss.
The concern largely developed from an earlier study that reported changes in dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, rather than directly measuring hair loss.
Importantly, a 2025 randomised controlled trial directly measured DHT and several measures of hair follicle health in resistance-trained men using 5 g/day of creatine monohydrate for 12 weeks. Researchers found no significant difference between creatine and placebo for DHT or the measured hair outcomes. (9)
No individual study can prove that an effect is impossible in every person, but the best direct evidence currently available does not support the claim that normal creatine supplementation causes hair loss.
Can Creatine Affect Your Kidneys?
This question needs a little more explanation because creatine and creatinine are not the same thing.
Creatinine is a breakdown product associated with creatine metabolism and is commonly measured in blood tests as one marker used to estimate kidney function.
Creatine supplementation can cause a modest increase in serum creatinine. This can sometimes make creatinine-based estimates of kidney filtration look different without necessarily representing actual kidney damage.
Recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses found increases in serum creatinine but did not find corresponding significant impairment in measured or estimated kidney filtration across the analysed trials. (10) (11)
